About

Afie Jurvanen, known professionally as Bahamas, is a Canadian singer-songwriter and guitarist born on April 28, 1981, in Toronto, Ontario. His stage name, reportedly suggested by his wife, evokes a sense of warmth and escapism that mirrors his music’s laid-back, soulful aesthetic. Before embarking on his solo career, Jurvanen played guitar for notable Canadian artists including Feist, Jason Collett, and Howie Beck. In 2009, he released his debut album, Pink Strat, establishing a distinctive sound that blends indie-folk, rootsy soul, and effortless guitar work.

Over the years, Bahamas has earned critical acclaim and multiple Juno Awards, with his 2010 album Bahamas Is Afie long-listed for the Polaris Music Prize. Jurvanen’s songwriting emphasizes intimacy and authenticity, often prioritizing the song itself over production, creating music that feels personal, reflective, and timeless.

In 2025, Bahamas released his seventh studio album, My Second Last Album, recorded in a modest backyard shed studio in Nova Scotia alongside longtime collaborator Joshua Van Tassel, with the two performing nearly all instrumentation. The lead single, “The Bridge,” premiered in September 2025, accompanied by a video featuring Jurvanen and his family by the shore, reflecting the artist’s contemplative phase. In interviews, Jurvanen has suggested the album title marks a turning point in his career, describing it as a period of reflection and creative recalibration, though he leaves the future open-ended.

Bahamas’ music appeals to listeners who appreciate mellow yet sophisticated songwriting, finely-tuned guitar arrangements, and lyrics that blend humor, heart, and existential observation. With My Second Last Album, he continues to honor his folk-indie roots while exploring soul-inflected grooves and intimate storytelling, offering fans both continuity and evolution in his sound. Calm, thoughtful, and unhurried, Bahamas remains one of Canada’s most compelling contemporary singer-songwriters, inviting audiences into a musical world that is at once warm, introspective, and deeply human.
